For a chance to connect with Gonz Chua and Shaomin Qian, join us for a reception accompanied with a Chinese calligraphy demonstration on January 12th, 2025 in the Central Library Atrium.

Gonz Chua and Shaomin Qian are members of the Indiana Association of Chinese Americans and talented artists. The exhibit will be shared with the public at Central Library from January 7- January 26, 2025.  

Artist Bio:

Gonzalo (Gonz) Chua was born and raised in the Philippines with a long career in medicine serving the community. He graduated from the UP College of Medicine in 1964. He finished his post graduate training at IUMC in Radiology in 1969 and is Board Certified in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. In 1972 he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service during the Vietnam conflict. He retired in 2000 as Chair of CT and Ultrasound and Director Emeritus of Radiology Education at Methodist Hospital. Dr. Chua was recruited out of retirement in 2005 as Clarian North Medical Center's first Director of Imaging Services. He finally retired in 2009 as Clinical Professor of Radiology IU School of Medicine. 

Dr. Chua has earned many accolades throughout his career. In 1998, he was named "Best Doctor of Indianapolis". In 2004, he earned "America's Best Physician". In 2007, he was awarded "Outstanding Teacher by Methodist Alumni". Then "Outstanding Overseas Educator by UP Medical Alumni Association in 2009. He was also a gold medalist of the Indiana Radiology Society and Fellow of the American College Radiology. 

Gonz has been awarded He is also a member of St. Monica Catholic Church of Indianapolis and is a third-degree Knights of Columbus St. Monica Chapter. Gonz is a practitioner of the art of Chinese brush painting and has conducted classes in the arts at the Carmel Library. He founded the Carmel Ink-and-Water Club in 2009. 

Shaomin Qian

Qian Shaomin, Zi Chun. Born in Hangzhou in 1962. At the age of eight, he began to learn calligraphy, and at the age of ten, he entered the calligraphy class of Hangzhou Children's Palace. Under the guidance of famous calligraphers such as Mr. Sha Menghai and Mr. Zhu Guantian, he learned calligraphy from Liu Gongquan and Yan Zhenqing, then Su Dongpo, and studied ancient inscriptions, laying a certain foundation for calligraphy. In 1973, he participated in the first calligraphy exchange performance between China and Japan after the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. In 1978, for primary school students to learn calligraphy, Chinese Painting, they created regular script stickers, which were first printed in 1.2 million copies. Calligraphy works are included in the compilation of Selected Calligraphy in Zhejiang. In 1980s, he participated in the main work of establishing Zhejiang Young Calligraphers Association and served as the first deputy secretary-general. After going to college and joining the work, I still insist on staying in the pool, which is regarded as the greatest pleasure outside my work. In calligraphy aesthetics, it tends to be natural and quiet in calligraphy, Chinese painting art style and pursues the calligraphy art, Chinese painting realm of "Arts are the expression of the heart".

About the branch

As the hub of the Indianapolis Public Library system, Central Library showcases renowned architecture and services. The original 1917 building, designed by Paul Cret and constructed of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, was considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. Its six-story glass and steel-framed addition, designed by Evans Woollen, opened in 2007.
