Culture, History, and Society: Historic Indianapolis Metropolitan Area Connections—From its early days as a hub for the railroad to its current status as a premier destination for major sporting events, conventions, and cultural experiences, Indianapolis is now known for its “Hoosier Hospitality” and for having a variety of tourist attractions. We'll explore key milestones in the city's tourism journey and highlight the record-setting success of 2024, a year that cemented Indy’s reputation as a top-tier destination. Discover what makes Indianapolis a powerhouse in hospitality and what’s next for the Circle City’s thriving tourism and event industry.   • Amy Johnson is a tourism, events, and hospitality lecturer at Indiana University—Indianapolis. Her career began with an interest in the world through the lens of the geography of place and people, emphasizing the importance of embracing different cultures as a global community. She shares her passion with students through her tourism geography courses and active involvement in worldwide study abroad programs for tourism and other students.
  • Dr. Amanda Cecil is a professor and industry expert in tourism, event management, and hospitality at Indiana University—Indianapolis. With a career dedicated to research, education, and workforce development, she has played a key role in shaping the future of event and tourism professionals. She serves on the Board of Directors for Tourism Tomorrow at Visit Indy and Discover Boone County.

This free online program is part of the Culture, History, and Society programs hosted by the Indianapolis Special Collections Room (ISCR). It is being held as an online meeting/webinar via Zoom. Registered attendees will receive the Zoom link via email within 2 hours before the online meeting/webinar. Indiana University—Indianapolis Speakers Bureau and the Office of Community Engagement Program Coordinator provided valuable scheduling support for this program.
