Award-winning illustrator and author Kadir Nelson will present the Library's 43rd annual McFadden Lecture. Nelson received the 2020 Caldecott Medal for children's book illustration, the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and Newbery Honor for "The Undefeated" written by Kwame Alexander.
Nelson has illustrated more than 30 picture books, including the Coretta Scott King Award-winning "We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball," which he also authored. Illustration from the book was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. His many designs have appeared on the cover of The New Yorker magazine, and several of his works have become commemorative stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. Books will be available for purchase through Kids Ink children's bookstore. Nelson will sign copies of his books. The lecture is free, but tickets are required for admission. Tickets are available for pick up at IndyPL locations beginning April 3. The Marian McFadden Memorial Lecture is made possible by Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
