LGBTed Talks are TED-style talks on subjects of interest to the LGBT community by partners serving them.
The LGBTQ+ Services Committee of the Indianapolis Public Library is partnering with 4 organizations serving the LGBT community in Indianapolis to share information about their areas of expertise and the services that they offer. Presentations will be held in the Indianapolis Special Collections Room on the 6th floor of Central Library. Presenting organizations include Trinity Haven, Gender Nexus, BU Wellness and Step Up.
The mission of Step-Up, Incorporated, a nonprofit organization in Indianapolis, is to provide comprehensive care and resources for wellness with dignity and inclusivity. In their daily activities, they strive to help people generate personal wellness through getting tested, accessing and adhering to medications, having safe housing, adequate nutrition, and sound mental health. Step-Up is focused on improving the health of the underserved and marginalized communities by meeting their clients where they are at, opposing inequity and stigma, and empowering individuals.
The 22,000 square foot Fort Ben Branch provides easy access to Library services and collections due to its location in a high-traffic community with access to public transportation. It includes community meeting spaces and study rooms, beautiful landscaping components, and walk-up, bike-up, and drive-up material return locations. Its roof-top solar photovoltaic system will provides 80% of the building's electricity needs. The Library was envisioned as part of a redevelopment plan since the land was decommissioned and transitioned from the U.S. military to the City of Indianapolis in the 1990s.
The Branch is the first library branch in the state of Indiana to become a Certified Autism Center™ by receiving an international autism accreditation through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).
