Join us on Zoom for a lecture exploring the history of LGBTQ+ civil rights in Indianapolis, beginning in the 1970s with the increased documentation of the community's experiences.
Expanding Our Story
From “Gay Knights” to Celebration on the Circle: Indianapolis’s LGBTQ+ History—As with most efforts to secure civil rights, progress for the queer community in the city known for its “Polite Protest” and “Hoosier Hospitality” occurred in fits and spurts. While LGBTQ+ individuals have always lived and worked in Indiana, this presentation begins in the 1970s, when their history was increasingly documented. It examines the obstacles and triumphs faced by the marginalized group, including protests against Anita Bryant’s visits, early Pride Week celebrations, the 1984 “Gay Knights” on the Circle demonstrations, and the state’s first large outdoor Pride event in 1990. Registration is required.
