Children 3-6 are invited to a virtual Library visit! Join us from home to sing along, listen to a story, see new places, and meet amazing people. In this week's feature, The Three Little Hoosier Pigs, the Indianapolis Opera presents a version of the classic tale told in song.

Reading Ready Time is a virtual library experience specifically designed to help children 3-6 years old get ready to read and connect with the Library.  We hope this program will help them make a connection, building on their path to becoming lifelong learners. This week's episode, The Three Little Hoosier Pigs, provides a unique child-friendly opera experience. Other Reading Ready Time episodes can be found on our YouTube channel

Additional resources:

  • Retelling stories is a great way to help children build background knowledge and comprehension.  After watching this video, read another version and compare – what’s the same?  What’s different?  This kind of analysis encourages deeper understanding and critical thinking. One great way to engage children in storytelling is to take a story they know well and change it just a little bit.  Fairytales and folk tales are a perfect opportunity for this practice.  Check out our blog post about Fractured Fairytales for more suggestions.
  • How many versions of The Three Little Pigs exist?  Check out this list from the Library to see 22 options.  Don’t forget, librarians are always available to pull together a teacher collection for you.  Just call your local branch.
  • Of course, there are directions for arts-related projects galore online, but this pig’s nose would be a really silly and fun way to get kids retelling the story.
