Sample Scratchboard Illustration

Join Esayas Zerazion, a local artist who mostly works in scratchboard art to learn and practice your hand at this interesting art practice.

Scratchboard, also known as scraperboard, is a way of drawing using a cardboard coated in India ink. The drawing surface starts completely black and is scratched using a sharp tool to reveal white lines. This is a great way to illustrate things using light and shadow.

This 2-hour class will cover:

  1. Esayas' background
  2. How light works - including highlight, shadow, core shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow
  3. Scratchboard + tools and techniques for using it
  4. Projects

Spend some time with this year's Adult Summer Reading Program theme during this program that lets you play like a 3rd grader in art class again!

This program is made possible by Danny & Debbie Dean and the Danny R. Dean Fund.

About the branch

The Southport Branch began in 1967 as a small storefront in the Madison Square Shopping Center. Following acquisition of a site for a larger facility, the new 15,700-square-foot library opened in 1974 on East Stop 11 Road. Even before the move occurred, a group of Perry Township residents demonstrated support by raising more than $5,000 to provide additional books for the new library.
