Make your own ice cream in a bag! Join us for our bi-monthly school-age program at the College Avenue branch library! This week, we'll be following up our annual Ice Cream Social by learning the science of ice cream and how to make it at home!
Join us for Saturday Smarties at College Ave, a time just for school-age kids (ages 6-12) to hang out, be social and creative, and try new things, every other Saturday. For our mid-August meet-up, we'll be shaking up scoops! Did you know that people were making desserts with ice in ancient times? Like any science, it was done again and again, improved each time, until we got the delicious frozen treat we call ice cream! These days, there are lots of ways you can make ice cream, including using just two plastic bags and some simple ingredients. We'll look at a little of the history of ice cream, explore the science behind it, and then make our own!
Established as the Broadway Branch in 1924, the library served the neighborhood from a frame house on E. 42nd Street until 1958 when a 6,500-square-foot facility opened on Broadway Street. This aging and overcrowded building was replaced in August 2000 with the current 16,000-square-foot structure on College Avenue that was renamed the College Avenue Branch.
