The Read In: Close Reading of James Baldwin & Nikki Giovanni
Monday, July 06
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Slower Reading. Richer Conversation. Together, we will close read James Baldwin's 1955 essay "Stranger in the Village" alongside Nikki Giovanni's poems "Nikki-Rosa," "Allowables," "For Saundra," and "Ego Tripping".
By placing Baldwin and Giovanni in dialogue with one another, we'll explore themes of identity, belonging, Blackness, memory, race, and the enduring power of language to name, challenge, and reimagine the world around us.
This Close Reading is a part of our monthly book club series The Read In, held every first Monday in the Center for Black Literature & Culture (CBLC) at Central Library. This is a program of More of This: A Creative Learning Community, curated by Mariah Ivey and Hallie Raikes, and sponsored by Artists At Work.
