Join us in the Indianapolis Special Collections Room (ISCR) at the Central Library for a presentation on the DigIndy Tunnel System, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Indianapolis history. Featuring Mike Miller, MSCE, PE, from Citizens Energy Group.
Culture, History, and Society: Historic Indianapolis—The DigIndy Tunnel System is one of (if not the) largest infrastructure projects in the history of Indianapolis. Citizens Energy Group built the tunnel system 250 feet below ground and with a diameter of 18 feet such that it will capture an estimated 5 billion gallons of wastewater overflow each year from the sewer systems of Indianapolis and direct the waste to treatment facilities for safe release. The captured waste would have otherwise entered the community’s waterways, and its elimination will be incredibly impactful for the river environments, water quality, and the public health of surrounding communities. This in-person presentation will cover the historical need for such a project; the evolution of its design; the interesting complexities of its construction; and what the program will now accomplish for our Indianapolis neighborhoods. Registration is required.
Presented by: Mike Miller, MSCE, PE, Manager (Technical Services & Construction) at Citizens Energy Group, has a rich background in the geotechnical engineering and construction industry. He has more than 25 years of professional experience, with the past 12 spent at Citizens Energy Group leading the program management of the $2 billion DigIndy Tunnel System. His expertise in geotechnical engineering (including investigations and instrumentation); earth support; temporary earth retention system design; and tunnel design has been crucial in the successful completion of DigIndy. He is a graduate of Michigan State University and a licensed Professional Engineer.

As the hub of the Indianapolis Public Library system, Central Library showcases renowned architecture and services. The original 1917 building, designed by Paul Cret and constructed of Indiana limestone in the Greek Doric style, was considered one of the most outstanding secular buildings in the U.S. Its six-story glass and steel-framed addition, designed by Evans Woollen, opened in 2007.
